Felled

Once, long ago,

I fell with my baby in my arms,

Bump,

Bump,

Bump,

Bumpety

Bumpbumpbump,

All the way

the steep stairs.

I held him tight,

Every single stair

bouncing my heart

like a beach ball.

There,

Sitting, clinging to each other

at the foot,

He laughing - gen ! gen !

Throwing his head back

in some sort of ecstatic longing,

But me,

So full of fright,

Hugging him far too tight,

Burying my head in his lovely hair

And sobbing so loud,

He begins to wail,

What a pair,

Clinging and crying,

Sobbing and wailing,

Until the cat came,

And led him away.

Deep Winter - second draft

The water breaks; A bird's wing, Shafts and quills intact along the shards of ice. Too heavy to lift, I tip the basin up and water drain...
